THe Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) presents Becky Guttin: We Can Work It Out an exhibition on view October 1, 2011 – January 5, 2012.

San Diego-based artist Becky Guttin will transform the OMA lobby with a playful installation inspired by memories of her childhood growing up in Mexico City. Working with Mexican cultural symbols such as mythical folk animals, tortillas and miniature houses, she investigates the meaning of home, family and identity. This new body of work also explores her interest in the contradictions of life, and the cultural conflict she struggles with every day.
We Can Work It Out will feature colorful vinyl paintings of mythical animals mounted on the museum’s front windows, photographs of colored tortillas and a lyrical installation of miniature homes that meditate on the innate human need to construct a home and find belonging in community. Paired with a vibrant large-scale carpet, this installation will invite visitors to linger and contemplate the comforts unconsciously associated with home.
Becky Guttin is an internationally-exhibited artist who has participated in over thirty group exhibitions and twenty-five solo exhibitions. Recently her work was featured at the South Korea World Calligraphy Biennale in 2011, the Venice Biennale in Italy in 2009, and the Museum of Latin American Art in 2000, among others. Guttin’s work can be found in permanent collections around the world including the San Diego Museum of Art, the Consulado General de Israel, New York, and the Museo Universitario Contemporaneo de Arte, Mexico City.
