Harn Museum of Art Presents Skimming the Surface Explorations in Art History Methodologies

The Harn Museum of Art presents Skimming the Surface Explorations in Art History Methodologies, on view October 16, 2011 – December 31, 2011.

kimming the Surface draws from the research that students conducted on works in the Harn Museum of Art’s collection for Professor Joyce Tsai’s graduate seminar Methods of Research, held in Fall 2010.

This exhibition grows out of a semester-long investigation into the fruitfulness of tending to the material specificity of the work of art, and to how attending to surface can lead to a number of different interpretive approaches. Each of the students was assigned a single challenging object to investigate using the methods discussed in class.

As part of their research, the students delved into questions of condition, provenance, technique, as well as how the object in question is situated in broader art historical inquiries.

This installation is made possible by The Dr. Madelyn M. Lockhart Endowment for Focus Exhibitions at the Harn Museum of Art which supports focus shows developed in collaboration with UF faculty to enhance teaching at the University of Florida.
