The Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Themes & Variations. Open October 15, 2011–January 1, 2012.
This exhibition, third in a series curated by Luca Massimo Barbero for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, explores the museum’s holdings of post war art, revealing connections, affinities and meanings both by the inclusion of ‘visitors’-works from earlier in the 20th century and works loaned from other collections-and by a thematic installation. ‘Script’ ranges from newspaper collage in Cubism and Futurism to the enigmatic marks typical of the work of Dadamaino and Riccardo de Marchi. ‘Space’, beginning with an image of the heavens by Rufino Tamayo, includes works by Mario Nigro, François Morellet and Arthur Duff. The exhibition closes with a homage to Gastone Novelli (1925-68), among the major Italian artists between the 50s and the 60s.
