The Stadelmuseum Refurbished Modern Art Galleries are to reopen to the public on November 17th.
The Städel Museum will present its new face in three stages. With the reopening of the areas “Modern Art” (November 2011) and “Old Masters” (December 2011), the refurbished old building on the Main riverbank will feature masterworks by a spectrum of artists ranging from Holbein, Cranach, Dürer, Botticelli, Rembrandt and Vermeer to Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Kirchner and Beckmann, presented in new and compelling arrangements. The opening of the museum’s all new contemporary art annex will take place in February 2012. One of Germany’s oldest and most important museum foundations will thus have nearly doubled its exhibition space, and will shine with new splendor.
Since its foundation in 1815, the Städel Museum has continually expanded its holdings by pursuing an active acquisition policy. The collection presently encompasses some 2,900 paintings, 600 sculptures, 500 photographs and more than 100,000 drawings and prints. With this rich inventory, the Städel presents a survey of seven hundred years of European art history – from the early fourteenth century to the Renaissance, the Baroque, early modern art and the present. Among the highlights of the internationally renowned holdings are works by Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer, Sandro Botticelli, Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Francis Bacon and Gerhard Richter. The area of contemporary art has gained in importance in the past years through the transfer of six hundred works from the Deutsche Bank collection and more than two hundred photographs from that of the DZ BANK in 2008, as well as through donations and a stringent purchasing policy. By these means, the Städel collection has been enhanced with works by such renowned artists as Georg Baselitz, Olafur Eliasson, Nan Goldin, Andreas Gursky, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans and Victor Vasarely. – www.staedelmuseum.de
