Neuberger Museum of Art Presents For The Love Of Art. Letters To Roy R. Neuberger

The Neuberger Museum of Art presents For The Love Of Art. Letters To Roy R. Neuberger on view through December 23, 2011.

In this tribute to Roy R. Neuberger, the Neuberger Museum of Art presents a collection of personal notes, letters, cards, and drawings given to him by various artists on the occasions of his 50th and 75th birthdays.

Artists such as William Baziotes, Romare Bearden, Irene Rice-Pereira, Joan Snyder, and Mark Tobey are represented along with many other artists whose lives were touched by the financier, pioneering philanthropist, and patron of the arts. In their correspondence, the artists express their admiration and appreciation for Mr. Neuberger as not only an adventurous collector and supporter, but as a friend.

These ephemeral documents now hold art historical significance, such as Lyonel Feininger’s sketch from 1908 for his 1913 painting High Houses II, which is in the permanent collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art, as well as drawings by Jackson Pollock and Adolph Gottlieb that anticipate significant developments in their artistic careers.

Works of art from the permanent collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art—including recent gifts from the estate of Mr. Neuberger—by the artists who participated in the “Birthday Books” will also be on view, some for the first time. Artists featured include Abe Ajay, Milton Avery, Charles Sheeler, Saul Steinberg, and Antonio Frasconi, among others.

Organized by Avis Larson, Assistant Curator, Neuberger Museum of Art.
