Museum of the Coastal Bend Opens Harold Nichols Art Exhibit

The Museum of the Coastal Bend at Victoria College presents the exhibition, “Harold Nichols: A Texas State of Mind,” beginning Thursday, Dec. 1 and continuing through Thursday, Dec. 15. The exhibition includes sculpture, paintings and watercolor drawings by this accomplished Victoria artist.

Harold Nichols Riding Herd

A native of West Texas, Nichols took up residence in Victoria early in his first career as a teacher. He quickly moved up from the position of instructor of Business Administration at Victoria College to Business Manager for the college, holding this position until retirement.

Nichols became a serious student of art after enrolling one of his children in a private art class. Throughout the years, he continued to pursue instruction in the visual arts and became an accomplished artist. Nichols elected early retirement from Victoria College to pursue a full-time art career.

In 1975, Nichols purchased the historic Farmers Co-op building and established his home and studio there for the next 25 years. He worked to develop the property into an art center—today the co-op is home to the Victoria Art League Community Art Center.

In his book, “Farmers’ Co-op, A Bridge Street Story, 1974 – 1999,” Nichols says, “To be an ‘artist’ in the full sense of the word involves more than exercising creativity with tools of the profession itself. It involves a way of life and concern about human relationships… beauty appears in places where once it was absent. It makes possible viewing people in new ways and destinies of life take on new dimension.”

A members’ reception with the artist will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Museum of the Coastal Bend. For additional information please contact the museum at 361-582-2511.

The Museum of the Coastal Bend is located on the campus at Victoria College, at the corner of East Red River and Ben Jordan. Viewing hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Visit the museum’s website, www.museumofthecoastalbend.org, for additional information.
