David Swanson Cutting Steel in the Yard 32″ x 40″ Oil on Canvas 2010

Sweat & Steel is an exhibition with powerful representations of the steely men and women who make the railroads run. The workers are often overshadowed by the mechanical beauty of the engines that pull and push their immense loads over vast expenses of the countryside. Sweat & Steel is a series of oil paintings by artist C. David Swanson depicting railroad workers operating and maintaining the locomotives and cars in Livingston, MT combined with railroading music, poetry, literature and hands on displays of railroading artifacts.

Swanson’s work is reminiscent of paintings done in the tradition of the great American realists- Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, and Thomas Eakins. His paintings speak to the relationship between man and machine as he explores the railroading experience that has so profoundly shaped the nation. – www.hockadaymuseum.org
