Georgia Museum of Art Joins Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative

The Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA) at the University of Georgia will host a Family Day Saturday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon celebrating art and movement in conjunction with Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative.

In keeping with Let’s Move!, the day will focus on healthy life choices, including food and fitness, and relate them to art at the museum.

A volunteer yoga instructor will teach animal-inspired poses on the first floor of the museum to encourage kids to get active. A tour of the permanent collection will focus on animal imagery in art, and visitors are invited to create their own animal-themed artwork in the Michael and Mary Erlanger Studio Classroom.

To promote healthy choices further, the museum will hold a taste-test of locally grown produce, and, in addition to the art they create, families will be able to take home a garden-planning packet including seeds provided by Keep Athens Clarke-County Beautiful.

GMOA has signed on to be a Let’s Move! museum to help demonstrate the role museums and gardens play in growing healthy communities. Let’s Move! Museums and Gardens is one subset of the Let’s Move! initiative and is coordinated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Family Day programs are free and open to the public. They are sponsored in part by Heyward Allen Motor Co., Inc., Heyward Allen Toyota, YellowBook USA and the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art.
