Charleston Museum Receives Reaccreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM)

The Charleston Museum, America’s first museum, announced reaccreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM).

“We are delighted to receive reaccreditation which recognizes the Museum’s comprehensive quality performance and ongoing efforts to accomplish its mission in accordance with ever-more-challenging professional standards,” says Charleston Museum director, John Brumgardt.

From application to final decision by the AAM Accreditation Commission, the process takes approximately three (3) years, involving a rigorous and time-consuming process of self-evaluation, on-site examination by peer reviewers, and final scrutiny by the AAM Accreditation Commission. “Fewer than 800 of the approximately 17,500 museums in the United States are accredited, so we are pleased to receive this designation and want to share the news with those who helped make it possible,” states Brumgardt.

“Accreditation assures the people of Charleston, South Carolina that their museum is among the finest in the nation,” explains president of AAM, Ford W. Bell. “As a result, the citizens can take considerable pride in their homegrown institution, for its commitment to excellence and for the value it brings to the community.”

The Charleston Museum, founded in 1773, is America’s first museum. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located along Charleston’s Museum Mile . Holding the most extensive collection of South Carolina cultural and scientific collections in the nation, it also owns two National Historic Landmark houses, the Heyward-Washington House (1772) and the Joseph Manigault House (1803), as well as the Dill Sanctuary, a 580-acre wildlife preserve. Museum hours are Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Museum admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
