The Bruce Museum presents Greenwich Lost & Preserved, an exhibition on view March 3, 2012 – May 27, 2012
Greenwich Lost & Preserved seeks to promote the value that old buildings have to the Greenwich community and provide the visitor with a deeper appreciation of the town’s past. Vivid contemporary images join vintage photographs, artifacts and paintings from private collections to show the story of historic preservation in Greenwich. The center of the exhibition tells the history of the Thomas Lyon House, Greenwich’s oldest unaltered house, and the seven generations of Lyon families who occupied it from the late 1690s until it was moved in the 1920’s. The house has been saved from demolition twice and its story explores some of the important ways ordinary people, in their daily lives, have been part of the great changes and events in American history.
Jo Conboy, chairman, Greenwich Preservation Trust, states, “This exhibition is our opportunity to introduce the Greenwich Preservation Trust to Greenwich and to the many visitors that come to the Bruce Museum. Our organization was initially created to save the Thomas Lyon House from demolition and we have expanded to bring awareness and advocate for all of Greenwich’s wonderful architectural treasures.”
Activities created for the exhibition will appeal to all ages, including “adopt-a-house”, the Greenwich Preservation Trust’s inaugural heritage speaker series, and walking tours.
Greenwich Lost & Preserved has been generously supported by the members of the Greenwich Preservation Trust as well as by the Julia Lyon Saunders family. The show at the Bruce Museum is supported by the Deborah G. and Charles M. Royce Exhibition Fund.
The mission of the Greenwich Preservation Trust is to educate and advocate for the preservation of the historic and cultural resources of the town of Greenwich through preservation projects and the development of preservation incentives in planning and land use policy and regulations. Greenwich Preservation Trust is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation currently seeking new members and donations to support its ongoing projects. This is the first time a town-wide effort to promote an inclusive program of historic preservation has been established.
