Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich opens Women. Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, an exhibition on view 30.03.2012 – 15.07.2012.

MAX BECKMANN Carnival Mask, Green, Violet, and Pink: Columbine (Fastnacht-Maske grün, violett und rosa, Columbine), 1950 Oil on canvas, 53 1/2 x 39 9/16 in (135.9 x 100.5 cm) St. Louis, Saint Louis Art Museum, Bequest of Morton D. May © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2012

Three exceptional 20th-century artists and their depictions of women, or rather the role attributed to women in their art, form the focus of this exhibition. Well known are the clichés surrounding the `public´ private lives of these three artists aside – their macho attitudes or alleged behavioural patterns etc. – their artistic handling of women as a motif goes far beyond any one-sided approach and stands, as such, apart from other considerations. Women appear in a considerably more differentiated and radical manner
in their work, they gain an extraordinary significance of their own, and are frequently and sensitively used to mirror the problems and upheavals in history. Women are not merely objects for the projection of male fantasies, passion or desire, but catalysts for a closer examination of their own biographies as well as of history in general (Picasso); they become self-contained counter-images, completely autonomous in their own right (Beckmann) or an independent force in which the expressive possibilities of artistic work culminate (de Kooning).

The exhibition will include some 90 paintings, important works from the major international museums and private collections.

An interdisciplinary catalogue in German and English with numerous images enriches the project. Furthermore we offer an extensive and many-facetted intermedia art and education program. –
