ABOUT “TERMINAL VELOCITY” EXHIBITION
“Through this new work, I continue my exploration of mapping and marking place, addressing the shifting, contradicting, and sometime absurd sentiment of centeredness,” the artist, Gregor Turk, states. “Obelisks and x-marks constructed of wood and wrapped with rubber serve as the primary forms in this exhibition with several works focusing on Atlanta’s own center points, its interstate interchanges.”

“This exhibition debuts our 2011/2012 group of Working Artist Project artists, marking our 4th year of supporting local artists through the WAP awards program,” states MOCA GA Director, Annette Cone-Skelton. “Gregor Turk’s exhibition combines his love of maps and his lifelong observance of Atlanta to focus in a new way on geographical elements that we encounter without thinking every day in our city.”

ABOUT GREGOR TURK
Gregor Turk is an Atlanta native who is known for his public installations, ceramic sculptures, photography and mixed media constructions. He is a graduate of The Lovett School and received a BA from Rhodes College in Memphis and an MFA from Boston University. He is currently an Adjunct Sculpture Professor at SCAD in Atlanta. Fascinated by maps since childhood, Turk is interested in what they tell us about ourselves as individuals and collectively as a culture. This exhibition at MOCA GA coincides with the 20th anniversary of Turk’s transcontinental trek by foot and bicycle along the US-Canadian border formed by the 49th parallel, at 1270 miles, the world’s longest straight boundary. Photo requests can be made by emailing MOCA GA at [email protected].

ABOUT THE WORKING ARTIST PROJECT
The Working Artist Project is an award program that was developed by MOCA GA and is funded by a major grant from The Charles Loridans Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Project was designed to support established visual artists of merit who reside in the Atlanta metropolitan area. This initiative provides an unparalleled level of support for individual artists, expands MOCA GA’s mission, and promotes Atlanta as a city where artists can live, work and thrive. Each year, MOCA GA selects three visual artists to receive the award. Among Atlanta’s best and brightest, these artists are supported with an exhibition, a promotion, a studio assistant and a major monetary stipend to facilitate their work over the course of the year.
