The AGC is delighted to feature the work of artist Mary Kavanagh and her recent project, Atomic Suite. Mary Kavanagh maintains her studio practice in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, where she is Associate Professor in the Department of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts, at the University of Lethbridge.
Kavanagh’s art practice encompasses installation, photographic and video work and engages with geographies, artifacts, texts, images and histories. Her methodology is research driven, and includes field work, archival work, documentation, investigative practices and performative actions.
Working with video projection, photography and conceptual drawing, Kavanagh’s new work reflects on atomic and nuclear industry, history and culture, with an emphasis on activity in the American Midwest.
Kavanagh has exhibited extensively across Canada and has participated in artist residencies and exhibitions in the U.S. including the Santa Fe Art Institute, New Mexico, and the Center for Land Use Interpretation, Wendover, Utah. In the Fall 2007 she was a Visiting Professor at Hokkai-Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan. She received an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan, an MA in Art History from the University of Western Ontario, and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Guelph. She has recently been invited to participate in the Canadian Forces Artists Program, established and supported by the Canadian Department of Defence. – www.artgallerycalgary.org
