ARCOmadrid 2013 presents Art from Latin America

ARCOmadrid 2013′s Solo Projects programme will, for the third year running, showcase Latin American artists.

The great attention received by this section in 2012 led to an important presence in the media, sales, and future projects for artists and galleries, and also brought recognition to many artists in the form of awards and purchases by institutions: the Chilean artist Voluspa Jarpa, shown by Isabel Aninat gallery, received the Illy Sustain Art Prize for her work Minimal Secret; and Mexico’s Marcela Armas, shown by Arróniz gallery, won the ARCOmadrid/Beep electronic art award for her work Máquina Stella. Collectors, institutions, and foundations also acquired works presented in this programme, including Fundación ARCO, with purchases including a notable work by Adriana Bustos, shown by Argentine Ignacio Liprandi gallery. In recent years two Latin American curators have been responsible for the acquisitions of Fundación ARCO: the Colombian María Inés Rodríguez, head curator at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico, and Brazil’s Adriano Pedrosa, curator of the last Istanbul Biennial. Both of them will again be in charge of acquisitions at the next edition of the Fair.

Solo Projects: Focus Latin America will again be a space for researching artistic creation in Latin America, with the help of a team of curators working with a double purpose: identifying the cartography of the newest and most important ideas from the continent, and as a panel of curators examining all the proposals sent by the galleries. This section symbolises ARCOmadrid’s role as a gateway to Europe for Latin American art, and will count with the collaboration of Inti Guerrero, artistic director of TEOR/éTica, Costa Rica; Catalina Lozano, co-founder of de_sitio, Mexico; Gabriel Pérez Barreiro, director of the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection, New York; Alexia Tala, independent curator, Chile; and Cristiana Tejo, independent curator, Brazil.

All the galleries interested in participating in this section can present a project by a Latin American artist before 28 September via the ARCOmadrid website: www.arco.ifema.es. Those interested can also apply to take part in the General Programme on the website, before 3 July.

Alongside the exhibition, supporting and providing a space for analysis of the different artworks shown at the fair, there will be various discursive activities. These will include the Second Meeting of European and Latin American Museums, directed by Natalia Majluf, the Director of the Museo de Arte de Lima, and from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, João Fernandes, who recently joined the Museum, and Jesús Carrillo. The meeting will bring together some 20 professionals from both sides of the Atlantic, and will focus on analysing mechanisms for cooperation through research, archives, and education; how to de-territorialise the notion of collecting in order to encourage a flow among collections; and going from the idea of private property to shared ownership.

The Latin American presence will also be in evidence in the Professional Meetings, with Patrick Charpenel and Magali Arriola taking part as co-directors of one of these sessions, as well as other experts taking part in the round tables of the Collectors Forum, led on this occasion by Rosa Martínez and Richard Flood. The public presentations and the Professional Meetings have come to be some of the most active parts of the fair thanks to the large numbers of professionals attending and networking with the participating galleries.

On the other hand, the scene of the Latin American art will have an even stronger presence this year, with the Opening section being extended to the whole world and young Latin American galleries taking part in it.

ARCOmadrid, which will hold its 32nd edition from 13–17 February 2013, has scheduled a circuit of international presentations in Latin American cities such as Sao Paulo, Lima, and Bogotá. These are designed to tell galleries, collectors, and art professionals about the key principles and content of the 2013 edition, and also to present the city of Madrid. – www.arco.ifema.es
