Getty announces GettyGuide multimedia player

From July 1, visitors to the Getty Center and Getty Villa will have new paperless ways to access information about what’s going on at the Getty.

The Museum’s GettyGuide® multimedia player will now be available free of charge at the Center and Villa, offering audio and video about the collection and special exhibitions, including a tour for the visually impaired that features detailed descriptions of works in the Museum’s collection at both sites, and fun thematic tours of the Center for families and adults. Collection highlights tours are available in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Russian at the Center, and in Spanish and English at the Villa.

For those with smartphones, Google Goggles™ coverage has significantly expanded at the Getty Center, to include 60% of the objects on display. Using the Google Goggles app, visitors can instantly identify artworks in the collection, plus access related information and audio.

Smartphones also come in handy in determining what to do and see at the Getty. Instead of grabbing a paper map and guide, visitors can now use their smartphones to find out about daily events, lectures and tours, browse Cafe and Restaurant menus, make reservations at the Restaurant, consult a map of the site, and tell others about their visit with new, welcoming mobile home pages: www.getty.edu/atcenter and www.getty.edu/atvilla.

In addition, the Wi-Fi network, GettyLink, has been expanded on both the Center and the Villa campuses, so that more public spaces and galleries are included, making it easier than ever to use mobile devices onsite.

“These steps deepen the visitor experience by providing more and richer information about our collections and exhibitions,” said Jim Cuno, president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. “It also helps reduce our reliance on paper and we are always looking for greener ways to do things at the Getty.” The Getty Center has a Silver-level LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Visitors can try out the free GettyGuides at the Getty Center in Gustav Klimt: The Magic of Line, a major international loan exhibition opening on July 3, marking the 150th anniversary of Klimt’s birth, and Herb Ritts: LA Style, which continues throughout the summer.
