Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston to present murals by Brazilian artists Os Gemeos

The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA), together with the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy and the Revere Hotel, announced that Brazilian artists Os Gemeos—a major force in public and urban art—will create two, large-scale murals in Boston as part of their exhibition opening Aug. 1 at the ICA.

The new murals will be located in Dewey Square on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and on the Revere Hotel Boston Common, and will remain on view throughout the run of the ICA exhibition (Aug. 1 – Nov. 25). Os Gemeos will begin work on the murals later this week. Media are invited to photograph the Greenway and Revere Hotel murals on July 30 and 31. Please see photo op schedule below.
“This summer, we are delighted to share the bright color, high energy, and distinctive Brazilian style of Os Gemeos’s art with the entire city of Boston. Combined with the ICA exhibition, the new murals will create an exciting urban art experience connecting the Boston Waterfront to the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway and the Revere Hotel near Boston Common,” said Jill Medvedow, Ellen Matilda Poss Director of the ICA. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy and the Revere Hotel to create a dynamic, city-wide platform for Os Gemeos’s work.”

The Revere Hotel Boston Common—the city’s newest, independent, boutique hotel—has embraced Boston’s vibrant art and culture community since its opening in April 2012. The Os Gemeos mural, located on the Stuart Street exterior of the hotel, exemplifies the brand’s commitment to the arts and its trailblazing efforts to cultivate unique and original experiences for its guests. The Os Gemeos mural on the Revere Hotel is made possible by the Boston Art Commission and the City of Boston.

The Os Gemeos mural on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway is the most recent collaborative installation of public art on the Greenway. The Greenway Conservancy hosted public meetings this year about the future of public art in the parks, and the Conservancy’s public art master plan is being finalized and will be presented in October.

The 70’ x 70’ temporary mural will be installed on the Dewey Square Air Intake Structure located between Summer and Congress Streets. The mural on Dewey Square will remain up at least through the end of the exhibition at the ICA (Nov. 25) and potentially for as long as 18 months (as approved by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation) or until the mural is compromised by weather and/or other unforeseen circumstances. The Os Gemeos mural on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway is made possible by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Boston Art Commission and the City of Boston.
