Silver Eye Center for Photography announces Call for Entries. Fellowship 13 International Photography Competition

Silver Eye Center for Photography announces a Call for Entries for Fellowship 13, our international photography competition. Now in its 13th year, this competition recognizes both rising talent and established photographers from all corners of the globe and from the state of Pennsylvania. In addition to two awards for photographers, we will inaugurate this year a $500 Multimedia Storyteller Award for a short documentary video or internet-based project.

This year’s judges are Sam Barzilay, Creative Director, United Photo Industries and Co-Founder, Photoville, Brooklyn, NY; and Ellen Fleurov, Executive Director, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh, PA.

Deadline for submissions via SlideRoom is Monday, November 26, 2012, 11:59:59 pm EST.

Awards
One (1) International Award Winner receives a solo exhibition at Silver Eye opening mid-January 2013; $3,000 for exhibition-related expenses; an online gallery on Silver Eye’s website (with link to artist website); and media outreach and promotion.
One (1) Keystone Award Winner receives a spotlight exhibition in mid-January 2013; $1,000 for exhibition-related expenses; an online gallery on Silver Eye’s website (with link to artist website); and media outreach and promotion.
One (1) Multimedia Storyteller Award Winner for a documentary or internet-based project receives $500; a dedicated article with URL and/or video download via Silver Eye’s website; and media outreach and promotion.
Six (6) Judges’ Commendation Winners will be named on Silver Eye’s website and press releases.

Eligibility
All U.S. and international amateur and professional photographers, age 18 and older at the time of submission, may apply.

Silver Eye staff and their relatives, Board members, current interns, and past Fellowship winners are not eligible to apply.

Judges
Sam Barzilay is the Creative Director of United Photo Industries (http://www.unitedphotoindustries.com), a Brooklyn-based art-presenting cooperative. He is also the co-founder of Photoville, a new pop-up destination that made its debut on the Brooklyn waterfront in the summer of 2012. Prior to launching UPI, Sam was the Director of the New York Photo Festival. In his dual capacity as curator and festival organizer, he has curated photo exhibitions and lectured on current trends in contemporary photography as far afield as China, Greece, and Japan. Over the past few years, Sam has also served as juror, editor, and reviewer for the Prix Pictet, Les Recontres d’Arles, Houston FotoFest, the New York Photo Awards, Artists Wanted, the Google Photography Prize, and the FotoVisura Grant, among others.

Ellen Fleurov is the Executive Director of Silver Eye Center for Photography. The founding curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, Ellen has curated over 85 exhibitions for American and international museums, galleries, and photography festivals. She is a frequent guest lecturer, grants panelist, exhibition juror, and previewer for Houston FotoFest; Photolucida and Critical Mass, Portland, OR; Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Society for Photographic Education; and InVision Festival, among others.

Selection Criteria
Award recipients will be selected by the Judges on the basis of exceptional, distinctive talent as evidenced by the strength of their submitted portfolios or multimedia projects. The Judges are especially interested in seeing portfolios or projects with a strong narrative thrust and highly individual, original points of view.

Judging
There are two (2) rounds of evaluation. The final selection takes place the week of December 3, 2012. Winners will be notified via phone immediately following the decision of the Judges. Non-selected photographers will be notified by email shortly thereafter. Decisions of the Judges are final and binding.

Silver Eye Center for Photography reserves the right to eliminate an award in the event an insufficient number of eligible entries meeting the minimum judging criteria are received, as determined by Judges in their sole discretion.

What to Enter
The submission you are entering is comprised of three individual items: 1) a one-page Artist’s Statement in PDF format; 2) your biography or CV in PDF format; and 3) your work sample.

For the International Award and Keystone Award, you may submit up to eight (8) images from a cohesive, exhibition-ready body of work created within the past three years. Or, if from an ongoing project, the portfolio must include images created within the past three years.

Submitted work may not have been previously exhibited at Silver Eye or in the Greater Pittsburgh region.

For the best image quality and fast upload, image files should be less than 2MB each, and sized around 1024 x 768 pixels @ 72 dpi.

For the Multimedia Storyteller Award, your multimedia submission may include either a video or an internet-based project. Please keep video files (.mov, .wmv, .flv) under 60MB and limited to a 3-minute clip.

You may also submit one still image from your piece plus a link to your video on your own website. The link should be part of your artist’s statement.

How to Enter
Submissions will be accepted via SlideRoom, an online system for receiving digital files.

Visit the SlideRoom web portal to apply, where you will be prompted to sign up for a SlideRoom account.

Complete the online application form, upload media, and submit fees.

You are strongly encouraged to login to the SlideRoom system and work on your application in progress, saving as you go over time. Your work will not be visible for review until you finalize and submit your application and fees.

$18 for current Silver Eye members at the $70 level and above, with membership valid through January, 31, 2013
