Perceval’ is a life-sized bronze sculpture of a Shire horse pulling a cart with two oversized squash. The subject matter reflects Lucas’ fondness for re-examining everyday objects in unusual contexts. The giant marrows are cast in cement, one of Lucas’ favored materials, providing a striking contrast to the high finish of the painted bronze sculpture.
Commenting on the installation of this sculpture, Mr Jean Paul Engelen, QMA’s Director of Public Art, said: “The installation of this sculpture is part of the Public Art department’s endeavors to install artwork by renowned artists in the public realm in Qatar. In addition to organising and managing exhibitions at the ALRIWAQ DOHA Exhibition Space and the QMA Gallery at Katara, the Public Art department is responsible for creating an artist residency program for young local artists to help them develop their skills and horizons. We are delighted to have this sculpture installed in this public place and we thank the Aspire Park team for cooperating with us on this project.”
Luca’s sculpture is a replica of a popular ornament that adorns many mantelpieces in the UK, while its name, ‘Perceval’, is the name of a knight in King Arthur’s court in the late 12th century.
English artist Sarah Lucas was born in Holloway, London, in 1962. She is part of a generation of Young British Artists who emerged during the 1990s. Her works frequently employ visual puns and bawdy humour, and include photography, collage and found objects. – www.qma.com.qa
