Hilliard University Art Museum presents Contemporary Folk Art From The Permanent Collection

Hilliard University Art Museum presents Contemporary Folk Art From The Permanent Collection, an exhibition on view January 19 – August 2013.

The term “folk art” has become a catch-all phrase for art created by artists not academically trained. Other terms applied to this type of art include vernacular, self-taught, naïve, outsider, and art brut, though each label makes reference to slightly different qualities about the artists’ experience or aesthetic intention. Common to most artists whose work is labeled Folk Art, is a lack of academic instruction in visual art and art history, a tendency to use found objects, a drive and intent to create objects for personal pleasure rather than marketability and a process tied to personal satisfaction rather than tradition or technical knowledge.

This exhibition will highlight the many diverse objects and artists in UAM’s collection which collectively fall under the rubric of Folk Art. – www.museum.louisiana.edu
