Artist Karen LaMonte will sign copies of her new monograph, Floating World, on March 7 from 5 – 6:30 p.m at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert. LaMonte is well-known for her work in bronze, glass, ceramic and cast iron works. Floating World explores the dual meanings of Ukiyo (the Japanese word for “floating world”) in an investigation of beauty through Japanese aesthetics. In her previous sculptures of life-size dresses with strong references to classical Greek and Roman statues, LaMonte explored themes of beauty, loss, and sensuality within Western culture. The new cast iron kimono works further explore these ideas through a Buddhist world view that suggests the ephemerality of beauty and man’s existence. Visitors are also invited to view the recently installed Kabuki bronze sculpture from this series in the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden at the museum.
