April Events at The Museum of Flight

The independent, non-profit Museum of Flight is one of the largest air and space museums in the world, attracting more than 500,000 visitors annually. The Museum’s collection includes more than 160 historically significant air- and spacecraft, the original manufacturing facility of The Boeing Co., and the world’s only full-scale NASA Space Shuttle Trainer. The Museum’s aviation and space library and archives are the largest on the West Coast. More than 100,000 individuals are served annually by the Museum’s on-site and outreach educational programs. The Museum of Flight is accredited by the American Association of Museums, and is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.

Wells Fargo Free First Thursday
Once a month, the Museum stays open late – and admission is free! Enjoy the Museum’s Great Gallery, Personal Courage Wing and more from 5 to 9 p.m., courtesy of Wells Fargo. Museum Store and Wings Café will also remain open for the extended hours on this night.

Thursday, April 4, 5 to 9 p.m.
NASA Climate Day
The Museum will celebrate NASA Climate Day with activities and presentations exploring the science of climate change and what we can do about it. Visitors can measure their carbon footprint, learn about the difference between climate and weather, and find out what “fossil fuel” means.

Bank of America Weekend Family Workshop: Cosmic Breakthroughs
Saturday and Sunday, April 6, 7, 13, 14
On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to leave the Earth’s atmosphere. Twenty years later, America launched the Space Shuttle on its first mission. Come celebrate these historical moments with The Museum of Flight!

Lecture and Book Signing
Saturday, April 6, 2 p.m.
“Knights of World War I Aviation” by Artist Jim Dietz
World-renowned military and aviation artist Jim Dietz will talk about his paintings depicting World War I air combat. Deitz will share his painting techniques, inspiration and artistic philosophy during this illustrated program. Following the lecture, the artist will sign copies of his new book of World War I art, “Knights in Canvas.”

This program is the beginning of a number of World War I-focused events and presentations the Museum will be sponsoring the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War I coming in 2014.

Yuri’s Night World Party
Yuri’s Night is a global celebration of humanity’s past, present, and future in space. Yuri’s Night parties and events are held around the world every April in commemoration of April 12, 1961, the day of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned spaceflight, and April 12, 1981, the inaugural launch of NASA’s space shuttle.

Wednesday, April 17, 6 p.m.
“The Forgotten 500” Lecture with Gregory Freeman
Author Gregory Freeman tells the World War II story of Operation Halyard, the largest rescue ever of downed American airmen. In 1944, more than 500 United States airmen were rescued, along with some from other countries, all right under the noses of the Germans, and mostly in broad daylight. Freeman is the author of “The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II.” Freeman will sign books following the lecture.

Saturdays and Sundays , April 20, 21, 27, 28
New airplane designs and quieter engines aren’t just easier on the eyes and ears, they’re greener too! Take a look at green aerospace technologies and make a Blended Wing Body airplane.

Panel Presentation
Saturday, April 20, 2 p.m.
57th Fighter Group Program
Members of the 57th Fighter Group will present the history of this famous group, starting with its formation and highlighting stories like “the Palm Sunday Cape Bon Goose Shoot,” where 76 enemy aircraft were downed by the 57th in one day, the single-highest tally of any allied mission during World War II.

The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle, Exit 158 off Interstate 5 on Boeing Field half-way between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. The Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $18 for adults, $14 for seniors 65 and older, $13 for active military, $9 for youth 5 to 17, and free for children under 5. Group rates are available. Admission on the first Thursday of the month is free from 5 to 9 p.m. courtesy of Wells Fargo. McCormick & Schmick’s Wings Café is on site.
