Sailing Saturdays come to CBMM this summer

Beginning in June, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD will offer visitors the opportunity to go out on the water in one of CBMM’s wooden sailing or rowing skiffs. CBMM’s Sailing Saturdays program runs June 22, July 13, August 10, and September 7, with two daily sailing sessions running from 10am to 12noon and 1pm to 4pm.

Built by CBMM’s Apprentice for a Day public boatbuilding program participants, the boats used range in size and are perfect for one to two people, with instruction provided for beginners. Sailing Saturdays participants will have access to a melonseed, various rowing skiffs, sailing bateaus, and more.

“This is a great way for our visitors to experience being out on the water aboard unique small craft,” explains Boat Yard Program Manager Jennifer Kuhn. “Participants enjoy the authentic experience of being on the water in some of the nicest, handmade wooden boats in the world.”

Drop-in participation is available, but reservations are encouraged as small craft are limited. The cost is $10 per person/session, plus museum admission. CBMM is open daily and also offers visitors the opportunity to help build one of these skiffs through its Apprentice for a Day program.
