Building upon its ongoing commitment to working with international artists and curators in Arles (France), the LUMA Foundation presents a series of projects throughout the summer. While preparations continue for the LUMA Foundation art and research center designed by Frank Gehry for the Parc des Ateliers, the Foundation is once again reaching out to a number of venues and partners across the city. This program is conceived by the Core Group of the LUMA Foundation for Arles: Tom Eccles, Liam Gillick, Maja Hoffmann, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Philippe Parreno and Beatrix Ruf.

An exhibition of Kunsthalle Zürich, curated by Beatrix Ruf, and coproduced by the LUMA Foundation and the Rencontres d’Arles for the current edition.
Venue: Atelier de Chaudronnerie (Grande Halle), Parc des Ateliers, 24 avenue Victor Hugo – 13200 Arles, France
Wolfgang Tillmans‘s solo show Neue Welt will be presented at the Atelier de Chaudronnerie in the Parc des Ateliers. First shown at Kunsthalle Zürich and curated by Beatrix Ruf, the exhibition will include new work for Arles. Neue Welt is coproduced by the LUMA Foundation and the Rencontres d’Arles for the current edition of the international photography festival.
Archive exhibition: To the Moon, via the Beach
Organized by Matthieu Humery
Venue: Le Garage, Hôtel du Cloître, 18 rue du Cloître, 13200 Arles
As a source of inspiration, the archive continues to be a central part of the LUMA Foundation’s conception for the Parc des Ateliers. The Foundation has been preserving not only archives of individual artists and photographers, but also collecting archives of entire exhibitions, conserving a valuable source for the analysis of exhibition history. Last July, the LUMA Foundation produced the four-day exhibition To the Moon, via the Beach, which took place in the Roman amphitheater of Arles. Conceived by Liam Gillick & Philippe Parreno, and curated together with Tom Eccles, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Beatrix Ruf, it saw twenty artists creating new work for this extraordinary setting. At the Core Group’s invitation, Matthieu Humery presents a sequence of films looking back on this ephemeral exhibition, shown at the Garage of the Hôtel du Cloître throughout July and August.
The Library is on Fire 1(b): Haunted Glyphs
Conceived by Charles Arsene-Henry and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster
Featuring Le rayon noir by Tristan Bera
The library is a core element of the forthcoming LUMA Foundation art and research center. It will be composed of two hemispheres: the research library and The Library is on Fire. The latter follows the cognitive, affective and physical adventures of a creature looking for the form of its intelligence. For its third apparition in Arles—from 1 July to 1 September 2013—The Library is on Fire takes the title Haunted Glyphs. Written and programmed by Charles Arsene-Henry and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, it will display seven experimental zones, including a reading image, a slow tracking shot research and a 3D printing workshop.
Symposium: The Flood of Rights
Conceived by Tom Keenan, Suhail Malik & Tirdad Zolghadr
To conclude the summer, the LUMA Foundation and CCS Bard College (New York) are renewing their long-standing collaboration to present the international symposium The Flood of Rights in Arles on 19, 20, and 21 September. Building upon the highly successful 2011 symposium The Human Snapshot, this three-day event invites an array of international guests to discuss the way in which human rights claims are now made, conveyed and demonstrated through user-generated communication channels. The participants include Amanda Beech, Cécile Boëx, Rony Brauman, David Campbell, Olivia Custer, Rosalyn Deutsche, Jackson Pollock Bar, David Levine, Sohrab Mohebbi, Philippe Parreno, Katya Sander, Sharon Sliwinski and Bernard Stiegler. The symposium will be held at Les Nouvelles Galeries, at Place Antonelle in Arles on 19, 20, and 21 September 2013.
