How to work together is a shared programme of contemporary art commissioning and research organised by three leading not-for-profit London galleries: Chisenhale Gallery, The Showroom and Studio Voltaire.
Together, over three years, we are producing a series of artists’ commissions, exhibitions, events and an online think tank through which we will commission new research from a range of artists, writers and designers responding to the question of ‘how to work together.’ Through the project, we are combining our knowledge and resources to discover what we can do together that we could not do alone.
The first four Think Tank commissions are now live on our website:
Artist Bonnie Camplin invited a group of individuals to participate in a one-hour silent refusal of Work at a central London conference facility for How to refuse work altogether; we have published writer Anna Minton‘s new essay “Common Good(s): Redefining the public interest and the common good,” or ‘how to work together as a society’; artist Céline Condorelli and sociologist Avery Gordon have begun a conversation about work in friendship and friendship in work, exploring friendships formed by making common cause amongst the excluded, marginalised and dispossessed; and design studio An Endless Supply have created the composite typeface Source Sans How to work together, using the open-source font Source Sans with customised letters by a number of international designers.
A further contribution by Andrea Phillips, Reader in Fine Art and Director of the Doctoral Research Programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and co-curator of the Public Programme at the Istanbul Biennial 2013, will be published in the autumn.
The first commissions for exhibition are in production now and will be realised in spring 2014:
Céline Condorelli will continue her research on the subject of work in friendship, and friendship in work (Chisenhale Gallery); the project Morning Star Rebranded will address the relationship between form and content by turning and mutating the branding of the UK’s only Marxist daily newspaper—led by artist Chris Evans with anthropologist Massimiliano Mollona, designers Dexter Sinister, and writer Marina Vishmidt (The Showroom); and US-based painter Ella Kruglyanskaya will make a new body of work in response to the proposition ‘how to work together’ during an extended production residency in London (Studio Voltaire).
