Chris Anderson, club manager of the Green Mill Jazz Club, is collaborating with Joe Lanasa, director of the Fulton Street Collective, in producing a monthly series with the aim of providing local bands and visual artists alike an opportunity to collaborate in response and pay homage to iconic Jazz musicians.
The events, entitled “The Jazz Record Art Collective,” occurs the third Wednesday every month at the Fulton Street Collective, located at 2000 West Fulton Street. Each month, Anderson and Lanasa will introduce a new lineup of jazz musicians, painters, sculptors, poets, and photographers, responding to a different record and musician.
This month, the Cameron Pfiffner Sextet will be performing Gene Shaw’s Debut in Blues in its entirety on Wednesday, October 16th at 8:30pm.
Debut in Blues was recorded here in Chicago in July of 1963 for the Argo label, which was the jazz division of Chess Records. The musicians were local with the exception of Shaw who was originally from Detroit, but made his home in Chicago at the time. Shaw was previously a member of Charles Mingus’ ensemble in New York, with whom he made two records- Tijuana Moods and East Coasting.
Cameron Pfiffner Sextet is:
Drew Hansen, Trumpet
Cameron Pfiffner, Tenor Sax
Matthew Davis, Trombone
Tom Vaitsas, Piano
Dan Thatcher, Bass
Someone Good, Drums
In addition to the live performance, paintings, photography, and poetry will be on display by local artists such as George Lindmark, Ben Salus, and Jonathan Franklin. This month, the work being shown is part of the theme directly influenced by Shaw’s album.
Admission will be a suggested donation of $10.
The collaboration is one of several new programs being developed at the Fulton Street Collective under a new administrative team aiming to engage and support artists in the surrounding communities of Chicago.
