Institute of Modern Art appoint Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh as Co-Directors

The Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia announced the appointment of Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh as Co-Directors. They will take up their post in January 2014, and lead the organisation through its next phase of development.

Founded in 1975, the IMA is Australia’s second oldest contemporary art space, and the hub of contemporary art life in Brisbane and the state of Queensland. Burns and Lundh will join the IMA from their position as Co-Directors of the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), in Derry, Northern Ireland, where they are part of the curatorial team for the 2013 Turner Prize.

During their time at CCA, they produced exhibitions with such artists as Goldin+Senneby, Jesse Jones, Anja Kirschner and David Panos, Raqs Media Collective, and Haegue Yang. At CCA they organised the first Curatorial Intensive in Europe, with the Independent Curators International, “From ‘Official History’ to Underrepresented Narratives.” The faculty included Mai Abu ElDahab, Annie Fletcher, Khwezi Gule, Paul Ramírez Jonas, Teresa Margolles, and Declan McGonagle. Previously, they curated exhibitions and projects for Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto; Konsthall C, Stockholm; Overgaden ICA, Copenhagen; and Western Front, Vancouver; featuring such artists as Bik Van der Pol, Geoffrey Farmer, and Superflex. Burns and Lundh have written extensively for art magazines and academic journals, including Art in America, Art Papers, Fillip, Journal for Curatorial Studies, Journal for Critical Theory, Kaleidoscope, Metropolis M, and Mousse, as well as for exhibition catalogues and books.

Burns and Lundh will bring to our organisation their commitments to supporting new work, inter-institutional collaboration, and education. They will build a program of research-led thematic seasons, involving exhibitions, residencies, publications, and discursive initiatives, embedding the IMA in its region, while connecting it internationally.
