De Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery are recruiting participants for the third edition of the Gallerist Programme running from September 2014 to June 2015.
Gallerist Programme
The Gallerist Programme is the first practice-oriented and curatorial programme for emerging art professionals who want to deepen their competencies in the commercial segment of the art world. The programme was initiated in 2012 and is developed together with The Fair Gallery, a collaboration between four international galleries: gb agency, Paris; Hollybush Gardens, London; Jan Mot, Brussels, and Raster, Warsaw.
The Gallerist Programme consists of five intense weeks filled with workshops, lectures, seminars, studio visits and encounters with recognised art professionals. The five sessions take place in one year at different locations around the globe, occasionally linked to events such as art fairs and gallery weekends. Previous sessions have taken place in Amsterdam, Basel, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Sao Paulo and Warsaw. Next to a set of given topics, the specific context inspires the content of the workshops and lectures.
Sessions
Each session focuses on different issues, such as ‘collecting from public to private,’ ‘hybrid spaces’ or ‘the current position of midscale galleries.’ Throughout the programme, members of The Fair Gallery provide the guidance and framework through which the participants can investigate specific research topics over the course of five meetings. The curriculum of the Gallerist Programme takes into account the critical balance between the artistic/curatorial and business goals that the gallery owner faces in today’s global market, but also brings administrative and practical aspects of the profession into focus. Workshops range from research assignments investigating historical precedents and pioneering gallerists such as Konrad Fischer, Wide White Space, Colin de Land, or investigations into seminal museum shows, to exercises in negotiation skills and developing your corporate identity.
Final project
Each year, the programme culminates in a final project at LISTE Art Fair Basel, where the participants team up to create a booth for a temporary gallery. LISTE, an important partner of the Gallerist Programme, is the leading international art fair for young gallery owners, and takes place annually alongside Art Basel.
“Something I have found really interesting about the programme were the international relationships developed within the group of participants from all corners of the globe; teasing out cultural differences has given me a real insight into art audiences and collections worldwide.”
–Nathaniel Pitt, (Division of Labour, Worcester), participant, GP 2012–13
Who can apply?
De Appel arts centre and the Fair Gallery are interested in candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences. A successful candidate has some preliminary experience working and engaging in the art field. The programme is also intended for individuals who have not yet anchored themselves in the for-profit field, but are curious in investigating its ramifications. We encourage that applicants apply with a specific research topic or issue in mind, presenting a new perspective.
