DOYLESTOWN, PA-Old school converges with modern musical ideas in performances by DrivetimeUOJ, the contemporary jazz ensemble that will perform at the Michener Art Museum’s February 22, 2014 Jazz Night.
UOJ stands for Urban Organic Jazz, and has been described as “funky grooves and jazz-soaked, melodic originals, from smooth to Latin to fusion.” DrivetimeUOJ is made up of bandleader and percussionist Bernie Capodici, who immersed himself in the world of Latin percussion while living in Dominica. In more than 30 years performing, Capodici has made special appearances with Chuck Reiney, Dexter Wansel, Jonathan Cain and American Idol’s Justin Guarini. Capodici has recorded with Bob Baldwin, Andrew Neu and Justin Guarini.
Sax player Richard Orr has performed rock, blues, big band and world beat, and has opened for Wynton and Bradford Marsalis at Kool Jazz Festival with Siembra, with Sun Ra, and Jack Dejohnette. Pianist/conductor/composer Jimmy Dell’Orefice has performed with Bob Hope, Joan Rivers, Clark Terry, Little Anthony and the Imperials and Petula Clark. He toured with Connie Stevens as her pianist and assistant conductor for many years and has recorded with Bobby Rydel and Al Alberts.
Guitarist Gene Terramani has recorded and performed with smooth jazz icons Grover Washington Jr., Tom Scott and Brian Bromberg. On bass, Christopher Friedrich – “the heartbeat of Drivetime UOJ” – has been featured on television and radio. Mike Piper on drums has worked with the Platters, the Intruders, the Blue Notes, the Delphonics, the Ambassadors and Bootsy Barnes.
“Each and every one of these musicians has accomplished so much in his career,” says the Michener’s Director of Programs Zoriana Siokalo. “Together as DrivetimeUOJ, their sound is phenomenal and we are so excited to feature them in the Edgar N. Putman Event Pavilion.”
