Winner of this year’s Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, Tino Sehgal, born in London and based in Berlin, will show his work for the first time in Brazil. Sehgal’s seminal work These associations will be shown for six weeks at the CCBB Rio de Janeiro, opening on March 12.

These associations brings us a collective devoid of hierarchy or stable order whose members tell visitors stories from their own life experiences. It creates a new form of assemblage with borders that can include the spectators themselves. The piece explores group identity in relation to individual subjectivity, and introduces a series of challenging questions on how collectivity can be invented. It transforms the exhibition area, steeping it in enigma and mutation.

The exhibition is curated by Marcello Dantas, who brought some of the most prestigious names in contemporary art to Brazil, among them Anish Kapoor, Antony Gormley, Cai Guo-Qiang, Christian Boltanski and Laurie Anderson. Dantas is also responsible for the artistic conceptions of a number of institutions, such as the Museum of the Portuguese Language, the Museum of the American Man, the Telecommunications Museum and the Museum of Mines and Metal, among others.

These associations is produced and directed by Asad Raza, who also produced Sehgal’s exhibitions in the Guggenheim Musem (New York, 2010) and the Tate Modern (London, 2012).

Part of the celebrations of the Year of Germany in Brazil, the exhibition is a partnership between Banco do Brasil, the Goethe Institute and the British Council. After CCBB Rio de Janeiro, the work will be presented at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
