Institutions share commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics programming
CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Museum Center has received a $40,000 cash and in-kind grant from Time Warner Cable, in connection with their Connect a Million Minds project, to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programming. The grant will help Cincinnati Museum Center continue its commitment to making science accessible, fun and engaging through exciting, hands-on activities.
“Science is all around us, from the simple acts of breathing and walking to the incredible feat of engineering that allows structures of steel and concrete to stretch skyward without tumbling down,” says Elizabeth Pierce, interim CEO of Cincinnati Museum Center. “We not only want to show kids all of the amazing science around us, but to ask ‘how?’. With the support of Time Warner Cable, Cincinnati Museum Center will continue to inspire kids to ask ‘how?’ and to learn more about the amazing worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”
Time Warner and its Connect a Million Minds project is helping to support several programs at Cincinnati Museum Center, including Girls in Real Life Sciences (GIRLS), Explorer’s University, Programs-on-Wheels and STEM-related OMNIMAX® films like Humpback Whales, currently playing in the Robert D. Lindner Family OMNIMAX® Theater.
“Time Warner Cable is proud to support hands-on STEM activities at Cincinnati Museum Center with this grant,” said Christine Mackin, Community Investment Manager at Time Warner Cable . “These programs challenge students and show them that STEM is more than just what they learn in the classroom – it’s also about solving real world problems and allows kids to discover STEM in a whole new way.”
GIRLS is a series of STEM experiences and activities that show how fascinating and how cool STEM can be. The program is open to girls (and boys) of all ages and connects you with real life women scientists as well as great hands-on programs.
Explorer’s University, a STEM-focused program, presents interactive family workshops for children 9-15 years old. Workshops include dissecting a marine organism to learn about biology and anatomy, examining the inner workings of computers and electronics and exploring space to discover the techniques astronomers use to understand the universe.
For students who can’t make it to Museum Center, Programs-on-Wheels brings the excitement directly into the classroom. Choose from a broad array of educational and entertaining science, natural history and social studies programs, all of which reflect national and Ohio curriculum standards.
The Robert D. Lindner Family OMNIMAX® Theater immerses visitors in adventures that take them from the edges of the universe to the depths of the oceans and everywhere in between. From volcanoes and stars to tornadoes and lemurs, OMNIMAX® films explore the science behind some of the most incredible creatures and phenomena that make the world we live in so amazing. The newest film, Humpback Whales, dives beneath the waves to take a closer look at these mysterious mammals and the scientists who continue to work to unlock their secrets.
Time Warner Cable’s support of the GIRLS program, Explorer’s University and Programs-on-Wheels will ensure that these programs and Cincinnati Museum Center continue to ignite the passion for STEM-related knowledge in students throughout the tri-state.
