Chesapeake Oysters author Kate Livie gives talk at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

On Friday, November 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Director of Education and author Kate Livie will give a presentation on her new book, Chesapeake Oysters: The Bay’s Foundation and Future. The presentation takes place in the Van Lennep Auditorium, with seating limited, and pre-registration needed.

Set for release on October 26, 2015, Livie’s book explores the history, culture, and future of the Bay’s beloved bivalve, from the oyster middens of the Chesapeake Indians to today’s boutique oyster farms. Livie’s presentation and readings will focus on the vivid stories and in-depth interviews included in the book, followed by a book signing. Samples of shucked, Chesapeake oysters will be available for participants at this free event.

“I wanted to explore how the Chesapeake oyster has been a thread connecting the Bay’s people, economy, and culture for thousands of years,” comments Livie. “It’s an epic story. Even today, after disease, environmental pressures, and over-consumption have dramatically impacted the wild oyster population, oysters are still so central to our lives here. They still evoke passion in a way no other creature does—like these contentious ongoing debates about aquaculture and the future of wild harvesting and regulations. In my book, I tell the Chesapeake oyster’s story. It’s a humble, delicious organism that is still timelessly central to our sense of place, our environment, and the essence of what makes the Bay unique.”

An Eastern Shore native, Livie is a Chesapeake educator, writer, and historian. In addition to her position at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Livie writes for the Chesapeake Bay Journal and www.beautifulswimmers.tumblr.com. She lives with her husband in Chestertown, Md.
