New York Times Best-Selling Author Larry Tye to Speak at National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series Continues with “Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon”

CINCINNATI, OH – The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will host New York Times best-selling author Larry Tye on Tuesday, April 4 at 6:00 p.m. Tye, the final speaker in the 2016-2017 John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series, will discuss his latest work, Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon. The lecture is free and open to the public. RSVPs are requested.

In Bobby Kennedy: The Making of a Liberal Icon, Tye draws on rare access granted to him by the Kennedy family, which includes unpublished memoirs, unreleased government files, and fifty-eight boxes of papers that had been under lock and key for the past forty years. He conducted hours of interviews with Robert Kennedy’s family and friends, including Robert’s widow, Ethel, his sister Jean, and his aide John Siegenthaler.

“We’re pleased to welcome Tye to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and look forward to an engaging conversation,” says Christopher Miller, Manager of Program Initiatives. “Tye’s writing is lauded in the worlds of journalism and media, and offers constructive insight to anyone who wishes to learn about the history of American culture.”

The John & Francie Pepper Freedom Lecture Series connects the public with award-winning authors, historians and thought-leaders, discussing themes on history, race, culture and modern abolition. Cincy Magazine is the print media sponsor for the 2016-2017 series.

Tye has also written The Father of Spin, Home Lands, Rising from the Rails, Shock (a collaboration with Kitty Dukakis), Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend, and Superman. He has worked for The Boston Globe as an environmental reporter, was a roving national writer, investigative reporter, and sports writer. Prior to that, he was the environmental reporter at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, and covered government and business at The Anniston Star in Alabama.
