Coast, Country, City – The Jerwood Collection

From Spring 2021, The Harley Gallery on the historic Welbeck estate in Nottinghamshire will feature a series of exhibitions from The Jerwood Collection of Modern and Contemporary British Art. Coast, Country, City forms the second exhibition in the Jerwood Collection’s year-long residency at The Harley Gallery. Coast, Country, City is scheduled to run between 24 July 2021 and 10 October 2021.

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through British art, exploring famous landscape artists’ images of the coast, country and city.
Independent curator James Rawlin has selected over 50 works from the Jerwood Collection for this exhibition.

He said: “These landscape paintings predate the strange year of 2020. I’m interested in whether our experiences of the year changes how we view these landscapes. Not only this, how might they differ from the artist’s original interpretation?”

Exhibits will range from work by artists including LS Lowry, David Hockney, Nicola Bealing, David Jones, John Piper, Prunella Clough, and Patrick Caulfield, to Edward Burra, Rachel Howard, Edward Bawden and David Bomberg.

James is an art advisor who specialises in British art (from 1900 to the present) and studio ceramics. Before this, he was Head of Modern and Post-war British Art at Sotheby’s. He has overseen significant art auctions and curated exhibitions on Modern British sculpture and UK artist Harold Gilman.
