A digital panoramic view of an extraterrestrial landscape, Right Here, Out There (Nowhere) offers a retro futuristic vision of space tinged with nostalgia. The immersive two channel video projection pays homage to cinema as the aesthetic medium of the 20th Century with its rich historical collage of excerpted science fiction films dating back to the early 1950s. Using computer-based rotoscoping—an animation technique in which animators trace over footage for use in live-action and animated films—Hironaka & Suib layer sections of films together to create the foreground, middle, and background scenes. The artists also bring heightened awareness to the clips they use by revealing the edges of one scene transitioning to another. An example of contemporary video art-making that references traditional filmmaking strategies, Hironaka & Suib’s time-consuming process reflects how the computer has become the aesthetic medium of the 21st Century. In addition to moving imagery, Right Here, Out There, (Nowhere) features music by the band Espers whose ethereal sound echoes the soft, epic feel of the artists’ work. – www.thedcca.org
