Saint Louis Art Museum Presents Programming on Panorama

Conservators and Historians Hold Discussions of Panorama

The Saint Louis Art Museum presents special programming on the exhibition Restoring an American Treasure: The Panorama of the Monumental Grandeur of the Mississippi Valley, featuring the Senior Curatorial Assistant Janeen Turk, Historian and Author Lee Sandlin, and Paintings Conservator Mark Bockrath.

On July 20, the Saint Louis Art Museum, in collaboration with the St. Louis Public Library Schlafly Branch, will present a free, 30-minute lecture on the Museum’s featured exhibition, Restoring an American Treasure: The Panorama of the Monumental Grandeur of the Mississippi Valley. Presented by Janeen Turk, senior curatorial assistant at the Museum, this lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the St. Louis Public Library Schlafly Branch.

On Thursday, July 21 at 11 a.m. and Friday, July 22 at 6 p.m., Historian and Author Lee Sandlin will present a free informative discussion entitled Myth of the Mississippi River in 19th-Century Popular Culture as part of the Museum’s Gallery Talk series.

On Thursday, July 28 at 11 a.m. and Friday, July 29 at 6 p.m., Turk will present a free Gallery Talk entitled A Long Forgotten Panorama Returns.

Mark Bockrath, Paintings Conservator, Barbara A. Buckley & Associates, will discuss Restoring a Pre-Civil War Panorama, the third Gallery Talk on the exhibition, on Thursday, August 18 at 11 a.m. and Friday, August 19 at 6 p.m. Bockrath is part of a team of conservators working on the restoration of the Panorama of the Monumental Grandeur of the Mississippi Valley currently underway in the Museum’s Main Exhibition Galleries.

Restoring an American Treasure: The Panorama of the Monumental Grandeur of the Mississippi Valley is on view through August 21, 2011, at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Free admission to Restoring an American Treasure has been provided by PNC Arts Alive.
