Ghost Story Festival at the Tennessee State Museum

The State Museum’s annual ghost story festival is back for its tenth year and promises to be more entertaining than ever! Haunted Museum takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 23. The event is free to the public, and will feature a “ghost trail” through the museum with prizes, crafts, and refreshments.

At stops along the ghost trail there will be chilling ghost stories from Tennessee’s past, including those of the Bell Witch, and the Cherokee spirit, Spearfinger. Of course the most famous resident on the trail is the museum’s 3,600 year-old Egyptian mummy. The trail ends at the tall tales stage where professional storytellers will tell stories about Tennessee.

This year the Haunted Museum will have on display one of its scariest treasures — a mummified thumb believed to have belonged to the notorious outlaw, John Murrell. The thumb was taken from what was alleged to have been the mummy of John Murrell which rested for many years in the Medical Department of the University of Nashville.

Children who complete each stop of the ghost trail will receive prizes. Those attending the Haunted Museum event are invited to wear costumes and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Located at Fifth and Deaderick Streets in downtown Nashville, the museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday and is free to the public. On Saturdays, parking is free at state employee parking lots to the west of the State Capitol.
