The American Museum of the Moving Image presents Dolls vs. Dictators an exhibition on view January 15-April 10.
Dolls vs. Dictator
The new Video Screening Amphitheater, adjacent to the grand staircase, is a screening area with an adjoining small gallery. Visitors will encounter a wide range of video art, animation, experimental film, and television work in this intimate setting. To inaugurate the space, the Museum commissioned a film and installation from acclaimed independent filmmaker and artist Martha Colburn. Colburn is best known for her stop-motion animation, created using collage, puppetry, and paint-on-glass techniques. For Moving Image, Colburn has made a film based on her photographs of the Museum’s unparalleled collection of dolls, toys, and other licensed merchandise.
The film, Dolls vs. Dictators, will be projected continuously, while eight tableaus, each corresponding to a scene in the film, are exhibited. Martha Colburn is a filmmaker and multimedia artist. Born in Pennsylvania in 1972, she now lives in Holland and the U.S.
