The de Saisset Museum presents Contemporary Native Works from the Permanent Collection, on view January 15 – February 11, 2011.
In conjunction with Sing Me Your Story, Dance Me Home: Art and Poetry from Native California, the de Saisset Museum presents a selection of paintings, prints, and photographs by contemporary Native artists from the permanent collection. Perhaps better known for its collection of historic Native artifacts, the de Saisset has been collecting contemporary works by indigenous artists for more than 30 years. The pieces in this exhibition, like those included in Sing Me Your Story, address a variety of themes ranging from spirituality to politics to social commentary and cultural heritage. Alternately lively and contemplative, humorous and even controversial, the images in this exhibition speak to the diverse history, experiences, and perspectives of Native American artists.
