The Sprengel Museum in Hannover presents Portrayals of Dance in Modern Art. From Varieté to the Bauhaus Stage, on view 02. February 2011 – 01. May 2011.
The renowned dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Mary Wigman, famously proclaimed that “Dance Devoid of Ecstasy – Unthinkable”(1886-1973). Consisting of more than one hundred works of art from the last turn of the century into the 1930s, this exhibition is devoted to dance, looking at the revolutionary developments made during this period making dialogue between the visual and performing artists possible. Paintings and sculptures, works on paper, photographs and films by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georg Kolbe, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Archipenko, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Robert Delaunay, Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack, Oskar Schlemmer as well as a number of other artists, and supplemented by documents from Loïe Fuller, Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca. A catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
