153 hand-crafted scale models detail development of early warplanes
SEATTLE – One of the world’s most complete collections of scale models representing World War I aircraft opens for permanent exhibit at The Museum of Flight on May 21. The exhibit of these 153 astonishingly detailed models in 1/48 scale will be displayed in the World War I gallery of the Museum’s Personal Courage Wing. The centerpiece of the collection is a 13-foot-long model of the L-30 Zeppelin dirigible, complete with interior lighting in the crew gondolas.
Model by Dr. H. Logan Holtgrewe
With the exception of the Zeppelin, the models were crafted entirely by Dr. H. Logan Holtgrewe, a Maryland-based surgeon by profession, who previously made over 400 scale models representing virtually all of the aircraft flown in World War II. Following the installation of that exhibit in the Museum’s Personal Courage Wing World War II gallery in autumn 2007, Holtgrewe began work on a comparable collection of the aircraft of the First World War. The two Holtgrewe collections provide one of the world’s most complete three-dimensional visualizations of the aircraft flown during the two World Wars. Holtgrewe sought the cooperation of airship historian Dr. Horst Schirmer, and Museum of Flight volunteer and master modeler Sandy Morton in the making of the L-30 Zeppelin model.

The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S., Seattle, Exit 158 off Interstate 5 on Boeing Field half-way between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport.
