PAFA Announces 110th Annual Student Exhibition

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) will present its highly anticipated and acclaimed Annual Student Exhibition (ASE), May 13 – June 5, 2011, in the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building, 128 North Broad Street.

Underwritten by PAFA’s Women’s Board, the exhibition allows visitors to see and purchase works by BFA students, third- and fourth-year Certificate program students, and Master of Fine Arts candidates. A PAFA tradition for over a century, this represents the culmination of training in the Academy’s disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking.

“Our 42 students from the MFA program will again show exciting, innovative works, which will be installed throughout the complete second floor of the Hamilton Building. Included will be newly arranged walls in the Sculpture Study Center to complete the show of our largest graduating’ or vertically hung installations throughout the first floor,” comments Jill A. Rupinski, faculty member and ASE coordinator for more than 30 years. “All of the exhibiting artists are working diligently under the critical eye of their assigned instructors to build a cohesive body of work worthy for a final thesis. This year promises to be an even more rewarding experience reflecting the strength and diversity of our programs.”

Visitors will enjoy more than 1,000 works, which showcase a diversity of styles that combine traditional skill and contemporary vision and are available for sale at accessible prices. This year works will be hung salon style on all three floors of the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building. In addition to its role as an exhibition and sale, the exhibition represents a competition for the coveted Certificate Program’s Cresson, Schiedt, Von Hess, and Women’s Board Travel Scholarships.

Edward Ogorzaly, President of Blick Art Materials, said: “Blick Art Materials is dedicated to supporting art and art education in every way that we can, including partnerships with colleges nationwide, such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. While we are the largest in the industry, with the broadest assortment and best prices, it is our service and community involvement that set us apart from all the rest. We are excited to support The Annual Student Exhibition, 2011.”

A Preview Party hosted by the Women’s Board of the Academy to benefit PAFA and student scholarship funding will take place on Thursday, May 12 from 4-8:30 p.m., giving guests a first look at the exhibition and opportunity to purchase artwork. A free public preview reception will take place Friday, May 13 from 5-8 p.m. Tickets to the Preview Party are available online at www.wbsecure.org or by calling 215-572-0550.
