Nevada State Museum Presents Voices from the Overland Trail

Dr. Doris Dwyer presents a lecture, Women’s Voices from the Overland Trail, at the Nevada State Museum Thursday, May 26, 2011, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. Dwyer’s presentation features stories from women’s diaries and reminiscences of early pioneers who traveled westward on the trail. These accounts vividly portray the hardships of pioneer life, the relationship of people to the landscape, and the character of the remarkable women who inspired others on the long journey. Dwyer presents Women’s Stories as an informal talk, rather than a Chautauqua, format.

Doors open at 6:00 pm for exhibit viewing in the main building. This program is made possible by
Nevada Humanities with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Nevada Energy.
Museum members and children 17 and under are free; non-member adult admission: $8.

Doris Dwyer has been a Nevada resident since 1980 and loves sharing her passion for pioneer life
in the 19th Century American West. A devoted history professor for Western Nevada College for
31 years, Dwyer has taught at every WNC campus and teaching center. She holds a PhD in American
History from Miami University of Ohio. Dwyer’s longstanding interest in women of the emigrant trails led to her first Chautauqua character, performed in 1994. She is nationally recognized for her Chautauqua presentations on women from this period.

The Nevada State Museum actively engages people in understanding and celebrating Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage.
