Kunsthaus Zurich presents Picture Ballot Encoding Reality, 11 November 2011 – 12 February 2012.
For this year’s Picture Ballot, the members of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft selected ‘Weltbild’ (1961). It is the first work by Ralf Winkler (*1939), better known under the pseudonym A. R. Penck, in which he develops his pictographic idiom. Reminiscent of a cave painting, ‘Weltbild’ presents Penck’s view of relations between East and West Germany during the Cold War. Human beings are reduced to lines; signs and symbols populate the work, enabling him to analyse social phenomena in an apparently scientific fashion. The exhibition opens up a dialogue between Penck’s work and that of other artists who, like him, explore their personal and historical reality in the form of a visually encoded language.
Picture Ballot 2012 runs from 9 November 2012 to 10 February 2013 and, in a festive touch, will have Christmas as its theme.
Picture Ballot is supported by Albers & Co.
