The Mechanicsburg Museum presents Holiday Exhibit – Trains, Trees & Gingerbread on view November 12th through January 14th, 2012 at the Freight Station.
Museum Association has grown. The Passenger Station, Freight Station, Stationmaster’s House, Frankeberger Tavern and Washington Street Station are all maintained by volunteers who belong to the Mechanicsburg Museum Association.
While a variety of fund raising efforts and capital campaigns provided the capital for purchasing and the preservation of these facilities, nothing would have been accomplished without the tireless devotion and hard work donated by our volunteers.
Nearly every day, regular volunteers can be seen at the Museum doing all those little things that “keep the show on the road.” Someone has to plan for the displays, set them up, promote them, take them down, and prepare for the next exhibit. At regular intervals, the properties are open to the public and “docents,” trained museum guides, must be on hand to explain the whys and wherefores of these old buildings to many visitors. There are many more opportunities for service at the museum, some requiring a fair amount of time, others a few hours here and there.
However, the most rewarding part of any of these activities is that you are taking an active role in the preservation of our community’s history and heritage. By volunteering, you are making a lasting contribution to our future.
