Georgia Museum of Art Appoints Sarah George as New Director of Membership

The Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA) at the University of Georgia announces the hire of Sarah George as its new director of membership, as of December 1, 2011. George graduated from Seattle University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in art history. She also received the Sullivan Leadership Award, the university’s most prestigious scholarship, while there, and studied in Tokyo, Japan; Kolkata, India; and both Florence and Rome, Italy.

From 2008 to 2011, she worked at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as an administrative assistant in human resources, as part of which she oversaw the museum’s internship program, and, simultaneously, as an accounting assistant. While at the Gardner, she also trained as a museum teacher, conducting gallery talks and school tours, and served as a member of the museum’s visitor experience and customer service task force.

She previously held internships with Open Satellite, a residency program for contemporary art in Bellevue, Wash., and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and served as a teacher’s assistant with Arts Corps, also in Seattle. Most recently, she has been volunteering in GMOA’s department of education, where she designed educational materials for Family Day programs, conducted grant research and attended training sessions for student and community docents.

The Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art are GMOA’s membership organization, founded in the early 1970s by a group of dedicated volunteers. The Friends are responsible for much of the private support the museum needs to bring in high-caliber exhibitions and programming and are involved in every facet of the museum’s activities: fund-raising, exhibition openings, acquisitions, educational programming and special events. – www.georgiamuseum.org
