Yale University Art Gallery presents Robert Adams: The Place We Live,
A Retrospective Selection of Photographs, on view August 3–October 28, 2012.

Robert Adams, Longmont, Colorado, 1979. Gelatin silver print; 5 x 5 in. Yale University Art Gallery, Purchased with a gift from Saundra B. Lane, a grant from Trellis Fund, and the Janet and Simeon Braguin Fund.

Featuring over 200 photographs, this definitive retrospective traces more than 45 years of work by one of the most significant chroniclers of the American West. All of Robert Adams’s major projects are represented, including his groundbreaking work on the suburbs of Colorado, his elegiac portrayal of southern California, and his more recent meditations on the endangered landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Drawn from the Gallery’s master sets of the photographer’s work, the exhibition presents an epic narrative of the American experience in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The exhibition is accompanied by two major publications—a monograph, What Can We Believe Where? ($25, Members $20),and a three-volume retrospective, The Place We Live, ($250, Members $200),which will contain over 400 images, including some previously unpublished, and a wealth of new scholarship on the influential photographer’s work. – www.artgallery.yale.edu
