Art Gallery of Greater Victoria presents William Kurelek. The Messenger

Art Gallery of Greater Victoria presents William Kurelek. The Messenger, an exhibition on view through Sept. 3, 2012. William Kurelek: The exhibition is the largest survey of Kurelek’s work ever mounted and the first in almost 30 years. It includes loans from galleries and private collections across Canada, as well as Great Britain and the United States.

William Kurelek was born to Ukrainian immigrants in Alberta in 1927, raised in Manitoba and spent his last 18 years in Toronto until his early death in 1977. Even though he travelled coast to coast painting Canada’s many regions and themes, most people may only be familiar with Kurelek as the painter of pastoral prairie scenes, popularized in his illustrated award winning children’s books, A Prairie Boy’s Winter and A Prairie Boy’s Summer and as the cover illustrator of W.O. Mitchell’s Who Has Seen The Wind.
