The Chora Church known today as Kariye Museum, hosts a remarkable collection of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. The church is situated near the Adrianople Gate (Edirnekapı), in Istanbul.
The church contains almost completely preserved collection of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes dating back to 1320s. Though the Byzantines regained the city in 1261, The Byzantine Empire was sovereign over a diminished territory. However, the new form of Anatolian Hellenism began after a half century later. With the recapture of Constantinople under the Palaeologan Dynasty, a new artistic tradition was developed by Byzantine artists. They gave importance to detailed narrative cycles and the depiction of landscapes. Mosaics and frescoes became a way of reflecting artistic expression. In that sense, the Chora is the finest example of the Byzantine church architecture and the Palaeologian Renaissance. Events from the lives of Christ and the Virgin were both visually represented with detailed cycles of narrative frescoes in the Chora Church.
