New Stedelijk Museum Opens September 23

On Saturday, September 22, Her Majesty the Queen will open the new Stedelijk. Beginning Sunday, September 23, the museum will be open to the public again. With a brand new wing, the Stedelijk now has more space than ever to show its famous collection and its renowned and influential exhibitions.

New Stedelijk Museum

The new Stedelijk consists of a historic building built in 1895 and a new extension realized by Benthem Crouwel Architects. The renovation included moving the main entrance to the side of the Museumplein, on which the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Concertgebouw are also situated.

The Stedelijk Museum is the largest museum for modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. The collection contains more than 90,000 objects dating from the the nineteenth century to the present. The old part of the museum houses the permanent collection. This consists of visual art with works including those by Karel Appel, Marc Chagall, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Andy Warhol. In addition, the museum offers a permanent design presentation including industrial design, graphic design, and applied art from designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Gerrit Rietveld, and Philippe Starck. For the opening of its spectacular basement, the Stedelijk will present eight special monumental installations from the collection, including new acquisitions. – www.stedelijk.nl
