The fourth season of the acclaimed Architecture & Design Film Festival—the premier showcase for films on the subject—opens at Tribeca Cinemas on October 18. This year’s edition includes more than twenty-five films from eleven countries on a wide variety of topics, complemented by engaging related programs.
The 2012 Festival will open with the world premiere of Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli, a profile of these two seminal figures and their work, directed by Robert Guerra and Kathy Brew.
A special feature of this year’s Festival is a second opening-night screening, the U.S. Premiere of Sixteen Acres, by Richard Hankin. The screening will take place on October 18 at the Allen Room, in the Time Warner Center, in midtown Manhattan. Presented in collaboration with the Municipal Art Society, Sixteen Acres, which will also be shown at Tribeca Cinemas on Friday, October 19, and Sunday, October 21, is the dramatic story of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site.
Other Festival films explore topics ranging from modern architecture on Long Island to West Coast Modernism; design schools, from the Bauhaus to the Institute of Design at Stanford University; urban renewal projects such as New York City’s High Line; the work and careers of individual architects both contemporary and historic, including Jeanne Gang and German Expressionist architect Erich Mendelsohn; and a chamber opera based on the work of iconic architect Louis Kahn, among other subjects.
Each program in the Festival will comprise a feature-length film and one or two shorts.
General admission to the Architecture & Design Film Festival is $14; $8 for students with a valid ID. Tickets sales will commence on October 1, and may be purchased at www.adfilmfest.com
